Abstract

The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) is a program whose mission is to archive, process, and distribute satellite data about the Earth's land surfaces. One of the primary systems that the LP DAAC uses to accomplish this mission is the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Core System (ECS). ECS stores the data in a near-line archive that provides both long-term storage and quick accessibility. Management of the near-line archive is a crucial aspect to ensuring the safekeeping of the data that is stored at the LP DAAC. A key to effective management is the availability of information, both current and historical, about the archive's status. This paper describes the LP DAAC Archive Dashboard, a reporting system that has been developed to gather information about the archive, store it in a central location, and provide accessibility to that information to managers and engineers alike via a simple World Wide Web (WWW) interface. The Archive Dashboard is an extension of an existing metrics-gathering system in use at the LP DAAC, the ECS Dashboard. It consists of three subsystems: a database subsystem to store the information, an extraction subsystem to gather the information and place it into the database, and a presentation subsystem to allow users to view the contents of the database. The Archive Dashboard furthers the goal of the ECS Dashboard of providing up-to-date information about the operation of the ECS system (in this case, specifically, the archive within ECS).
