Abstract

There are still organizations in this country carrying legacy hardware and software that need to be modernized implementing the latest hardware and software including DBMS. National College of Information Technology (NCIT) of Urbana, is a similar organization which is still carrying third generation legacy computer equipment including 80386, 80486 and Pentium I machines, some of these being used a stand alone PC's and some computers are connected through low speed LAN. Most of the computerized systems are developed in FoxPro 2.0. There is an urgent need to implement new hardware, the latest software and an RDBMS to the college. The project mainly focuses on evaluating, selecting an appropriate DBMS for NCIT and finally implementing it. After selecting the Entities an Enterprise Data Model is developed and finally a detailed ER Model is produced. During Logical Design Entities are transformed into Relations that are ultimately normalized. In Physical Design data transfer technologies from legacy system are reviewed, RAID levels are studied and the best suited RAID levels that ensure best performance and fault tolerance coupled with 1/0 balancing with minimum disk contention are selected. Analysis of prevailing DBMS available in the market has also been done and the best available RDBMS is recommended for the college. Then a stable version of selected RDBMS is selected for final implementation. The Implementation phase incorporates a fully functional RDBMS including installation, creation of database, and creation of additional Tablespaces, Rollback Segments, Tables, Indexes, Snapshots and Snapshot Logs. Data transferring scripts are also included for implementation. There is also a section on online backup/exports and Database Monitoring and SQL Tuning.
