Abstract

The report goes through implementation details of the UPS Freight and Time in Transit Calculator for Fey Industries, Inc. Fey Industries is a manufacturing business in Edgerton MN that sells products to distributors and the end customer. The company needs the ability to more accurately and timely estimate freight. UPS (United Parcel Service) is the primary freight company they use in order to ship their products. The sales staff needs the ability to give the customer the freight estimate while they are on the phone with them. Previously, they would have to request freight quotes from the shipping department, which would take hours, if not days, to receive back. Fey Industries produces promotional products and thermoformed packaging. The products they sell have a low cost per unit but are bulky; and many times, the freight cost can be the determining factor on making a sale. In most cases, packaging is an afterthought and sales staff must be available with the complete solution-product, freight and availability. Fey Industries reviewed canned software packages that would allow them to rate shop but all were too expensive; therefore, they decided to use their internal staff to create a focused application around UPS, the primary freight provider. UPS is offering 828 XML web services to their customers--Rate and Time-in-Transit estimates. The technology used in this project report will be XML, HTTP, Internet, Network Protocol analyzer, web servers, dynamic web page generation and database technologies to provide a complete UPS Freight and Time in Transit Calculator for Fey Industries' domestic shipments.
