Abstract
The main objective of this project was to centralize the access of HR-related information for all TIC and PSD* employees in an easily accessible online format. Before the implementation of this project HR information, both electronic and hard copy format, resided in various locations making it difficult for users to navigate and find the information they needed. This caused frustration for both employees and HR personnel, and incurred unnecessary labor costs. The development of the TOSHIBA HR Express Intranet system has addressed these issues. In researching why TIC should develop an HR intranet system and how, it was determined that satisfying HR customers would have a positive impact to other areas of the organization. In addition, the cost versus benefits showed a positive ROI thus improving the company's bottom-line. Furthermore, based on research the decision to build a custom site inhouse as opposed to outsourcing the service to a vendor was also confirmed. Companies with similar circumstances revealed positive outcomes to their own custom HR intranet implementations. Another positive choice, confirmed through research, was that of developing in ASP.Net using the Visual Studio IDE for the main web development environment. It allowed for rapid application development and ease of deployment. The project was initiated in May 31, 2007. The main content site (Phase I) was made available to employees on February 13, 2008, and the content management area (Phase II) was made available to HR personnel on March 30, 2008. The system documentation and backup will be completed in April, 2008. The site allows employees to obtain a variety of information regarding Toshiba companies, HR personnel contacts, employee benefits, career opportunities, and others. It also allows them to give feedback through a suggestions and comments form. Most pages provide the opportunity for employees to be interactive with the site making choices from dropdown menus and selecting more details. The HR calendar provides a reason for employees to return to the _site often to see what events are coming soon. In addition, a news/community information area gives employees more incentive to use the site. According to the feedback from HR and the web tracking reports provided by Traffic Facts, the project is shown to be successful at meeting the initial objectives. Future plans are already underway for other HR systems that will integrate with this one. Keeping a site new and improved continually will ensure its sustained successfulness. *Toshiba International Corporation (TIC) and Power Systems Division (PSD)
