Abstract

A small, local small business that recently opened their doors for business has been seeing a negligible amount of business inside the store settings. In realizing their situation, and my own desire to learn more about web development, the project for development and maintenance of a web presence for a small business came to life. It was important to the business owners to create an online presence, and it was important to me to learn about web development, the different styles, and the correct approach to building a store web site. The overall scope of the project included a basic understanding of what the store employees required, and what I deemed capable of creating. With the requirements in hand, the solution approach was to determine what software was best suitable for the project, what addition programming expertise would be necessary to meet the requirements, and if the time frame was achievable. The software choices were limited in consideration of pre-existing knowledge, but all would provide the essential tools to reach the final outcome. The programming language that was helpful but not required was HTML, and optional programming knowledge in PHP and JavaScript were also utilized. The variables that I had in my personal control included programming expertise, and general software knowledge on the different types of web development software available. The variables that required constant measurement were the adequate utilization of all the software functions. The result of the development and maintenance of a web presence for a small business project is a web site that is user-friendly, basic, optimized, and completely functional.
